View โYashtimadhu โ literally "sweet stick" โ is one of Ayurveda's most beloved Rasayana herbs. This sweet, cooling herb soothes inflammation throughout the body and is particularly prized for respiratory, digestive, and hormonal health.
Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), called Yashtimadhu in Sanskrit (meaning "sweet stick"), is one of the world's most widely used medicinal herbs and one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda. It is mentioned in all classical Ayurvedic texts and is a component of over 60% of Ayurvedic formulations.
Yashtimadhu is classified as Medhya (intellect-promoting), Balya (strength-giving), Chakshushya (beneficial for eyes), and Rasayana. Its cooling, sweet nature pacifies Vata and Pitta doshas, making it particularly valuable for Pitta-type inflammatory conditions throughout the body.
The primary active compound, glycyrrhizin (which is 50x sweeter than sugar), has potent anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and adaptogenic properties. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) removes glycyrrhizin for safer long-term use.
